Plantar warts (verrucae) are caused by a common, highly contagious virus: the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is contagious by contact, either by touching the wart itself, or indirectly in communal places that we are barefoot like public pools, gymnastics, change rooms, or barefoot play areas.
